BEER CAN CHICKEN

with Seven Sons Pasture-Raised Whole Chicken

A cold, refreshing beer isn’t just for cooling down on a hot summer day, it can be used to make delicious, flavorful chicken. The seasoning of herbs and spices and the steam from the beer creates meat that’s so tender, so juicy, it’ll fall right off the bone. Fire up the grill or preset the oven because it’s time to make Beer Can Chicken.

Ingredients list:
  • Dry Rub Ingredients:
  • 2 tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 2 tbsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Smoked Paprika
  • 2 tsp Tarragon
  • 2 tbsp Brown Sugar
  • Wet ingredients:
  • 1 (12 ounce) Can of Beer
  • 2 tbsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (or Vegetable Oil)
  • 1 (3.5-5 lb) Seven Sons Pastured-Raised Whole Chicken

  1. Baked Beer Can Chicken:
  2. Start by mixing all the rub ingredients together in a small bowl. Drizzle the olive oil over the chicken and rub it in all over. Sprinkle over the rub and use your hands to massage all the rub into all the nooks and crannies.
  3. Open the can of beer and pour about 1/4 of it into the roasting pan and set the can of beer in the center of the roasting pan. Place the chicken upright over the beer can and drizzle the olive oil over the chicken.
  4. Transfer to the oven, bake it for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes in a 425 F degree preheated oven. To properly test if the chicken is cooked through, use a meat thermometer to check and make sure the internal temperature of the chicken is 165F/75C degrees.
  5. Grilled Beer Can Chicken:
  6. Preheat your gas grill to medium-high heat, with all burners lit. Prepare the chicken as stated in the instructions with the spice rub and oil.
  7. Make sure the beer can is open, and only half-filled with beer, don’t throw away the other half, drink it!
  8. Lower the chicken onto the beer can, making sure the chicken sits upright.
  9. Place the chicken on the grill, use the legs and beer can to support the chicken and keep it stable.
  10. Cover the grill and let it cook. Check it after an hour, then every 15 minutes or so. As with the oven, it’s best to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken and make sure it reaches 165 F degrees.
